Chair and Trustee at Mind in Kingston

See what our current Trustees say about their experiences here:

Bijal, trustee and part of our HR and EDI Sub-Committee

Hi,

my name is Bijal Dattani-Parek and I serve as a trustee on the board and as you may have noticed, we're looking for some new trustees to join our board so we thought it might be useful to do a day in the life of a trustee video to show you the kind of things that you might get up to she just the way the polls work so that we need six weekly and that these meetings we can discuss a range of issues from diversity, fundraising, growth, HR, or anything else that's real time.

Each board member also brings their own set of experiences and skill set to call and my background is that the lawyer which means that I lead on the legal matters for the organisation, this will entail either speaking about the issues at board level or working with the CEO or with our team to resolve any legal issues that have arisen outside of that boardrooms, also expected to join the subcommittee so I said on the HR subcommittee, I'm also founder and chair to the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Sub-Committee, which is a really important initiative that we're very passionate about and we'd love for you to join that journey with us. I think that's pretty much the centre of the day in the life of trustee online in Kingston. You can be joining board meetings, subcommittee meetings, working group meetings or working directly with the CEO and the team on various issues. In terms of kind of personal opinion. I think this is a really rewarding role. I think over the last few years, it's been really clear that mental health is so so important, and it's been so wonderful to see that I'm in charge of mental health initiatives. And for me personally, it's really rewarding to be able to use my skills in a way that I can help the people. If you're interested in learning more about the role or speaking to one of our team about it, do get in touch and we look forward to hearing from you

Marylin, trustee and part of our EDI Sub-Committee

Hello everyone,

I'm a trustee for Mind in Kingston. I've been a trustee for some time, and I found the meetings so friendly and amiable, but it also wanting to do more to create services for those who've been through mental illness and listening to our users of our services to see how we should develop further.

Why not apply and see whether it would be right for you?

Why the vacancies?

Two of our trustees left our board at the end of March having made an immense contribution to the impact of our charity, one as Co Chair of our charity, and Chair of our HR Sub Committee, and one as Chair of our Marketing and Fundraising Sub Committee. Having moved to new areas of the country one has joined the board of the local Mind in their new area and the other has joined the board of a high profile charity in their new area. We are celebrating with them the beginning of the next steps in their personal journeys, and have used their departure as an opportunity to consider how we can improve our contribution as a board further.

So as we look at the successes of the past we also look to the future and are looking to bring new talent with fresh perspectives into our team. We see this as a vital part of our growth. We are growing our revenue and impact, and expanding the scope of services we are offering. To succeed and reach our ambitions we recognise we need to keep growing together as a board and a charity team.

How we work as a group of trustees

We will be a board of ten trustees. Small enough to be agile and engaged, large enough to not overburden anyone. As a group we and our CEO focus on the wellbeing of our trustees, and our staff and volunteer team. We champion better mental health and make sure we practice actions that will help our  team model that ambition.

We make time to get to know one another, to understand one another, and to find alignment on both our planning direction, our longer term strategy and on the key decisions that are ahead of us. That requires robust challenge, critical thinking, ensuring a safe space for everyone to contribute and for ideas to be shared, developed and learnt from.

We meet every six weeks as a formal Trustee Board. We also have an email group, what’s app group and encourage open contact between us all so we can all share, engage and stay informed in a way that fits our individual lives.

We have four sub committees of the Board that are formally established and work to support our programme.

  1. The HR sub committee leads on our policies and procedures, our staffing, risk, and our pay philosophy.

  2. The Finance sub committee leads on financial reporting, budget setting, use of reserves and project financing.

  3. The Marketing and Fundraising sub committee leads on our marketing strategy and fundraising strategy.

  4. The Inclusion, Diversity and Equality  (IDE) sub committee gives focus to our work to improve equality of mental outcomes and be more diverse and more inclusive as a charity. The IDE is chaired by a trustee but is an organisation wide group giving focus to our work in support of our equality, diversity and inclusion agenda. Our sub committees and IDE sub committee meet mostly during the day, our trustee board meets in the evenings.

As trustees we commit ourselves to working with the wider team on key projects and there will be opportunities for you to work on areas that interest you. We are committed to hearing the voices of lived experience to influence all our work, and are investing in gaining greater impact through this work.

Since March 2020 all our trustee work has been done digitally, with meetings hosted on zoom and teams. We anticipate this way of working remaining the same for some time to come. When allowed again, and safe for everyone, we will resume in person meet ups and sessions,  but we expect our formal meetings to remain digital most of the time. It is important to us that the board reflects the areas we work in, Kingston, the wider south west London region and Surrey. But you do not have to live or work in Kingston or the surrounding areas to join. The contribution you can make is paramount.

What next?

We hope you remain interested in making a contribution both to our work and to our team. We certainly look forward to learning about you and exploring together how we might achieve, and enable, better mental health.

To start the conversation email your interest to Alexandra@mindinkingston.gov.uk together with a current CV and a short introduction either written, audio or in video, telling us why are you in interested in joining us.

Once we’ve reviewed the applications, we’ll be in touch, and you should expect to hear from us within three weeks.
